A local history book says the portuguese colonization was not long lasting but cruel, and Portugueses even made the "evil" of distributing their genes into the local population through relationships they had with the local population. Interestingly this Maldives book writer considers evil what is considered to be good in our country, Brazil. Darcy Ribeiro, a famous Brazilian anthropologist who defended the portuguese interracial intercourses as one of the most benefic aspects of their Brazilian colonization in his book "The Brazilian people" must be very sad about this author opinion.
Probably, the similarity of plants and fruits are due to the Lusitanian ships who as their famous poet Camoens once wrote “Arms and the Heroes, who from Lisbon’s shore, Thro’ seas 2 where sail was never spread before,
Beyond where Ceylon lifts her spicy breast, And waves her woods above the wat’ry waste” carried these plants here or there.
Besides lamenting the fact that many of us do not know Maldives, as for its beauty, I also regret it for the extreme sympathy for its people. As a brazilian, I could find that they love Brazil as for its football. Friendliness and smiles are a constant here.
HOW TO GET THERE:
Maldives is far away, but it is a unique destination. The fastest ways from South America are Emirates and Qatar airlines, two good Emirates companies, with flights leaving from Sao Paulo. See the home pages of the two companies regarding it.
After around 14 hours of flight from Brazil , there is a flight connection to Malé, the capital of the country, landing there after more than four hours. You can purchase tickets at your travel agent or the travel sites like Expedia. It costs between 1500 and 2000 dollars from Brazil, depending on the season, and a great idea would be to combine the trip with the gorgeous Singapore, flying the spectacular Singapore airlines from Sao Paulo. See a travel agent about the best option for the time you want to go and all the air company sites, as usual.
I believe that a true comparison should include the search for travel packages and flight alone with a direct hotel reservation on its site and a inquiring email.
Where to stay:: Take a look at Tripadvisor site and a search option for your budget or/and desire.
When you get to Male airport, you will see a small round island on the other side of the airport. That is MALE, Maldives capital, with its midsized packed buildings and mosques roofs in this Islamic country. It is certainly a pleasure visiting Islamic countries for its people always pleasant and curious about our country..
Upon arrival I was pleasantly surprised to see a huge Brazilian flag from the airport, across the ocean, in Male, since Maldives people were enthusiastic about the Brazilian team in a football tournament.
For arriving at Malé airport, do not forget customs necessities . You have to be with the yellow fever vaccine up to date, if you are coming from a required vaccination country, with the specific certificate stating the vaccine dates attached to your passport.
You also can not bring pork, dogs, pornographic material, material that infringes upon the Islamic faith, or more than US 10,000 or equivalent amount.
When getting off the plane, friendly immigration officials, many of them women with an official uniform adorned with an elegant veil will print your passport without more questions.
If you came to the Maldives, you certainly reserved before a hotel in one of his heavenly islands. So there will be waiting for you some hotel personal for a transfer by boat or seaplane right-to-hotel.
Note: The islands are small and isolated, so that each island has just one resort hotel.
Upon arrival, we found that there are several hotels close to Male and an itense boats transit, their main means of transport, as with seaplanes But if your hotel is far away, you will be happy to take off in a seaplane. We chose a hotel that is located on an island in the northern atoll, with a forty-five minute flight from Male. We were greeted by an employee of the hotel chain we choose, the Hilton hotel, and immediately left our bags in a check in counter, as they were assigned to be transported to our hotel. Soon after, we were put on a minibus and transported to a seaplane airport , just five minutes away. We have waited for seaplane call in a beautiful and new Hilton's VIP lounge
Just a half our later, we were called to travel to our hotel.
Our hotel rate is around US$ 220 with breakfast. There are beautiful restaurants and it worths every penny, without exorbitant prices . If you are thinking of going to the Maldives, you should consider the Hilton Iru Fushi Hotel. You can book it directly on Hilton site or look at sites such as Agoda, booking and others. Agoda home page has even the values of seaplane transfers.
We were fortunate to be Maldives air passengers, a sort of air taxi company, but with seaplanes. The seaplane trip itself is unforgettable. Taxiing and taking off from the sea as you can watch my film here is really very cool and just remember if you have fear that if any problems should happen seaplanes can land anywhere down there. Sea plane travel costed around $ 300 per person each way and it is included on hotel bill. (See price before you go).
The 45 minutes flight was wonderful and unforgettable, though I was tired. There were beautiful white and green islands in the sea, with unbelievable green, sometimes blue sea. There were atolls all around, exposing its innards of reefs, under the near-equatorial sun. It was simply gorgeous.
Arriving on the Island
When we arrived at our hotel we were greeted by a friendly staff in a island harbor. The welcome is personal and friendly, and a polite employee of French origin referred us to the hotel reception. As usual in many hotels a pre-authorization on my credit card was debited, but no stress. Then, we were directed to our room in electric cars like those used in golf courses.
Small roads by white sand swallowed by dense vegetation on the way to our room were all around.
My option was a bungalow beach room, bordering the sea. The room is big, very nice, and the bath room is located in a large open area near a garden area with no roofs, but surrounded by a large wall, with a large round bed at the end. There are two showers, one being totally open, suitable for hot and humid climate on this paradise. In addition, there is a large hot tub placed round the middle of this garden-bathroom.
The sound of birds and tropical breezes also caress our senses.
NEXT DAY: DRAGON FRUIT
We woke up still dazed by more than 9 hours time zone and went to breakfast. We preferred to walk. Just a five minutes walk. For those with walking difficulties there is a golf cart service and it can be ordered by phone at any time. The breakfast is rich and varied. A true brunch with many food options, including local dishes. All you can think of a breakfast, with American or European standards you will find here.
The fruits are very similar to ours in Brazil. Mangos, curiously, are not usually eaten, as in Brazil, but used for juices and desserts, and sauces ingredient of the local cuisine. The mango juice is delicious, sweet in nature and inviting to nave it on the edge of a pool.
It was then that I met the Dragon Fruit,a stable company during my visit to South Asia. It is a large fruit that looks like a microphotograph of mast cell and with a hard consistency. When cut in half, It looks like a an avocado pup, but it has a white color with black bumps, like a kiwi , but tastes is different, very smooth.
I advise a bungalow beach. You will have all your day with a private beach front of your room and more quiet. An over water bungalow despite all the charm, will make you walk a few by wooden bridges and ways in order to reach the beach and the pools and l felt they can leave you with a sense of isolation more than a real contact with the sea and nature.
WHEN TO GO
The driest months are between November and April, however there may be rain even in these months.
In general rains are fast and heavy. I have noticed that the weather can change quickly. But though it is not common, you can have cloudy or rainy days followed by sun , even at the time of wet weather which runs from May to October, although days can be windy and there is a higher chance of showers. The heat is always present, as well as moisture.
YOU SHOULD CARE:
As with any trip, be sure to contact a travel agent and get a health care insurance while traveling. The hotel has a medical clinic with a very nice Indian doctor.
There were many children in the islands, mostly Russians and Chineses.
BEACH , BEACH , BEACH ....
Maldives is a paradise for sea lovers .
It is not only possible to express in words the beauty of this place.
The islands are wild and clean. The richness of their shells, which adorn its sands, the richness of its marine life, a delight for any diver or snokler is an unforgettable experience.
Or even for those who want to enjoy a beautiful view, or immortalize this moment, better shared by two, perhaps its biggest positive aspect.
I will never forget its thousands hermit crabs, taking their shells on their backs, as if racing each other. The efficient biological control of insects made by small lizards, disgusting but efficient mainly for some Europeans in his comments about the hotel in the world hotel forums are two curiosities of the island .
You can not go back without some shells of the world's most famous pearl, which has graced many palaces of old empires.....
No doubt a place of dreams for a honeymooners. Be the first one or one of several ones if you can.
See these pictures and get to your conclusions about the beauty of this unique country.
